During the week of July 10-16, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.
During the week of July 10-16, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; Puna, four; South Hilo, three; and South Kohala, two.
So far this year, there have been 634 DUI arrests compared with 583 during the same period last year, an increase of 8.7 percent.
There have been 725 major accidents so far this year compared with 779 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.9 percent.
To date, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities compared with 13 at the same time last year, an increase of 61.5 percent. There also have been four vehicle-related deaths this year not counted toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the other two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
